George W. Bush raising money for prominent Republicans-except Ken Paxton

Ken Paxton hopes to secure Texas’ open Senate seat in November’s election as the GOP nominee against Democrat James Talarico. But Paxton shouldn’t expect help from two prominent Republicans in the Lone Star State.

Former President George W. Bush and outgoing Texas Sen. John Cornyn were featured speakers at a fundraiser in Dallas on Monday night, in which the two GOP stalwarts raised money for six Republican congressional nominees in “battleground states,” per the New York Times’ Bayliss Wagner and Theodore Schleifer.

Republican Senate nominees in Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire and Ohio each received donations to help their respective campaigns. That same generosity wasn’t extended to Paxton’s campaign.

Paxton’s office could not be reached for comment as of Tuesday morning. Bush has yet to comment on Texas’ Senate race as of late September, while Cornyn has remained critical of Paxton after losing May’s GOP Senate runoff election.

“Paxton’s a poor campaigner,” Cornyn told The Texas Tribune in August. “He’s lazy and doesn’t raise money. And he basically is not offering a very compelling case for his election.”

Bush is unlikely to criticize Paxton in public. The GOP détente didn’t hold as strongly in a recent spat between another Texas Republican and one of Bush’s former top surrogates.

Bo French, the GOP nominee for Texas Railroad Commissioner, drew widespread criticism this month for his racist comments regarding students at the University of Texas. One of French’s harshest public critics was Karl Rove, a longtime Republican advisor and a member of the Bush administration. Rove is a GOP lifer. He’ll make one exception this November.

“This November, I’ll vote for only the second Democrat in my life. The first was Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock in 1994, because I thought he would work with Republicans,” Rove wrote in the Wall Street Journal last week. “The second will be Mr. French’s opponent, Jon Rosenthal.

“The GOP’s stables need a cleaning. This is a good place to start.”

Paxton has been Texas’ Attorney General since 2022, when he defeated George P. Bush, the nephew of George W. Bush, in the GOP primary.
