Cameron must not have repented for having offered an in-out Referendum on EU affiliation to the Britons in 2016, he did right, and Macron must do the same, he lost the job of PM and Tory Leader but at least the UK is not in France’s situation. Nor Italy’s.
I want to be blunt about France: they’re not protesting for human rights nor for immigration, but for money.
The French are used to be rich, to have good wages, good schools and good pensions, they can’t see why they should endure “Austerity” now, and the answer to why is this austerity on the table now, the answer in one word is: Euro. You don’t have the Franc you have the Euro and to keep France in the Eurozone you have to endure the austerity the pension cuts, the public spending review and the French don’t want them these hard-times things, they want the money for the schools, money for the pensions, money for the good wages, everybody refuses austerity from Pensioners to Students to Cops and Employees and we know it and as a European (Italian) I say “they’re right”.
It’s about time Macron does like Cameron and offers the way out, yes Sir: the in-out referendum from the Eurozone or even better from the EU and do like Brexit. Frexit.
I know Cameron burnt down his own political career almost doing that but I also know he did right and deep inside he also knows he was right: you can’t force people into the straight-jacket of the eurozone and EU Rules: they have to choose it, and if they don’t you have to set them free.
The Citizens must have the moral responsibility to stay in the eurozone and endure the austerity or revert to the Franc and do what they want with their money “Germany Independent” “EU Independent” right? They’re citizens they’re not EU subjects, but during a three months In-Out Referendum campaign they must be told the truth: that if they choose to stay in, in the eurozone they must endure austerity, the Economists, the Journalists, the Politicians must tell them the truth, must not cover up the eurozone with strange wording about peace in the world and austerity necessary to keep peace in the world “We’re Europeans, we’re not just French”. Right?
I remember a very clever and very clear Economist, a Scotsman working in the USA with Stieglitz predicting that France would exit the eurozone first, he said the euro had become like closing the doors in a building on fire, enduring never ending cuts and austerity to allow the Germans selling cars and he added “I don’t see this ending up well”.
In fact:

I’m sorry I can’t remember the name of this Economist, he was a Scotsman who worked with Stieglitz and was also ginger I can’t remember anything else, it would be cool to remember the name, but he was saying this before François Fillon got ousted from the French political races because the scandal and before the scandal he had been tipped for winning and becoming President with the French Republicans and he was a Thatcherite that means a politician who cuts the Welfare and Public Spending to the minimum… now considering the eurozone and the position of France he said “that’s hard selling” now Macron is doing (trying to do) the Thatcherite, he is trying to cut welfare and public spending, and freeze wages and that reveals itself for an impossible selling at least in France.
He should give the keys back to the people, not by going to early elections or resigning but by telling the French: “Do you want to stay in the eurozone or not?” And do the Frexit Referendum.
Frexit should win – if people have understood that austerity comes from the eurozone, right? – and David Cameron should be only thanked not to have plunged Britain into the chaos France is now.
At a certain point no one wanst to do austerity for the eurozone and let alone giving billions to Zelensky for war & bribes too.
Poeple have priorities.
