Starting July 7, 2026, every car or van that receives a license plate for the first time in a European Union Country must be equipped with a series of advanced safety systems, regardless of when the model was designed or approved. This is the final step in the General Vehicle Safety Regulation adopted by the EU in 2019, which marks a crucial step: not just new models approved by the authorities, but every single new registration.

Anyone who buys a new car today—even if it’s a model that’s been on the market for years—is taking home a vehicle that comes standard with these technologies, by law.
What every new car must have from now on

The most significant changes concern four main areas:

Automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. This isn’t just an acoustic warning: the system uses radar, cameras, and sensors to identify people or bicycles in front of the vehicle. If the driver doesn’t react in time, it automatically intervenes to brake or reduce speed.

Advanced anti-distraction system. A device constantly monitors the driver’s attention level—via the internal camera, the steering wheel position, and the vehicle’s trajectory—and signals lapses in concentration or signs of fatigue, prompting the driver to take a break.

Emergency Stop Light (ESS). When the vehicle exceeds 50 km/h and undergoes sudden deceleration, the rear lights begin to flash rapidly to warn those behind. The human brain perceives an intermittent signal much sooner than a steady one: this gain in reaction time can translate into approximately 4.5 meters of reduced space before impact.

Passive design modifications. New cars must ensure improved forward visibility—fewer blind spots in front of the driver, which are particularly significant in cities—and a larger safety glass surface, designed to reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision. Tests for worn tires have also been updated.
